Psalm 84:10
Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a door keeper in the House of My God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
Another great Psalm to learn off by heart.
I saw a bumper sticker recently, which read, “The worst day fishing is better than the best day at work.” It doesn’t get anywhere near to the sentiments of this Psalm.
“How lovely is Your dwelling place, O Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God” (v1 –
2).
What about you? Do you know God that way? True worship is not some ‘worked up experience’ so much as an overflow of a lifestyle. Until we can say the same words as these, we will never reach those heights of worship that the spirit within us longs to experience.
You can have all the ‘trimmings’: the vast crowd; the stunning choir; the magnificent orchestra; the exciting rhythms and even encouraging, praising words, but they will all remain just that – until your spirit is fed by your mind and heart with an attitude of worship. Until you have a deep down insatiable longing to search for, be with and adore God and His Son, Jesus Christ, you will remain just ‘in the outer courts’.
Yes, you will see others worshipping but it will remain observation and unreal. Until Jesus fills your vision and your deepest desires. Until you seek Him and only Him. Until you prioritise your time and effort to do so, and become a daily obedient disciple, you will never experience the worship that God longs for us all to know as a daily living reality.
Why does God want us to experience this lifestyle? Is it for His own ego? No. It is for our own benefit. God knows that we have been created to have an intimate relationship with Him. It is only in submitting our wills to His will and authority in our lives that we can really find our true selves and a life of purpose and fulfilment.
So many want the dynamic resurrection power of God in their lives, not realising that it would destroy them. The only people who can handle it – and the only people God can entrust it to are those who have died. Died to their own ego. Died to their ambitions and died to themselves and who now live solely through the self-same resurrection power. (See Philippians 3:10-11; it’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!)
Where do you want to spend your time? Relaxing in front of the T.V. or dwelling in the Temple of God. Listen, “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favour and honour; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless. O Lord Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in You” (v 11-12).
Who do you trust in? Yourself, others, or God?
Where do you want to spend your time?
Cultivate an insatiable appetite for the Presence of God and your life will be transformed.
