Psalm 90:4

For a thousand years in Your sight are like a day that has gone by, or like a watch in the night.

Timelessness.

This Psalm is the opening Psalm of Book 4. Interestingly enough, it is not one of David’s, Asaph’s or Korah’s who were involved with most of the rest, but one of Moses’ Psalms.

Anyone who gets close to God is bound to overflow with praise and worship and few have got as close as Moses did. “Lord, You have been our dwelling place throughout all generations” (v 1). What an amazing statement from Moses. The man who spent most of his life as a wanderer in the desert.

If there was anyone who experienced ‘homelessness’, it was Moses. Hidden for 3 months to avoid being killed, he was then launched on the water of the Nile in a bulrush basket. Found by an Egyptian princess, he was ‘adopted’ and brought up in a foreign palace. Then, when wanting to find identity with his own people, he went too far and committed murder and so fled into the wilderness where he lived for a further 40 years as a fugitive.

He was then ‘called’ to return to Egypt to begin the process of releasing the people from their captors. He was unwelcome to the Israelites, who preferred servitude to freedom, and was hated by Pharaoh. He eventually led the people out of slavery by a long trek from Egypt and through the Red Sea. He then had to walk around the wilderness for another 40 years because of the people’s rebellion and unbelief and he eventually died on the mountains of Moab.

Where was his dwelling place?

I shall never forget a journey I made from New Zealand to England in order to visit my ailing, aged parents. I went via South America and whilst in Argentina, I suddenly had this vivid realisation – I belong nowhere. Born in England, living in New Zealand but travelling in Argentina. I didn’t belong anywhere anymore – and yet I belong everywhere. Wherever I am – God is there – My God is there and it becomes ‘home’.

Yes, I had a glimpse of what Moses meant. We do not ‘belong’ to earth – we are all just passing through. We belong to God – to Heaven and when we are in intimate relationship with God, He becomes constantly our dwelling place. He is our security, our peace, our joy and our greatest possession. (See also Hebrews 11:8-10 & 13-16.)

“A thousand years in Your sight are like a day that has gone by.” How big is your God? No matter what happens to us, in the reckoning of God, it is a minute passing phase. That is not to say we are insignificant or irrelevant to God – on the contrary, He invaded history because He loved us so much; but rather, we need to get our lives into His perspective. (And if you are going through a really tough time, remember the phrase from the Old ‘King James’ Bible – “And it came… to PASS!”)

Nothing can happen to us that the King of the Ages doesn’t know about or have power and authority to change or help us through.

As you ‘travel through’ today, remember this – He is there right beside you.

Today, please make Him your Dwelling Place.
