We have arrived at yet another book, which is ‘different’ to say the least. It is a book of sensual love. Of true pure intimacy as God intended it. It reaffirms that God invented sex and expects us to enjoy it to the full, because it is pure and natural. It is an integral part of the highest experience of an intimate relationship.
The Book also gives us a picture, not only of a bride and bridegroom, husband and wife, but also of the far deeper and profound love God has for us as individuals and the love between our Bridegroom, Jesus, and His Bride, the Church.
It is important to understand these insights as the background to what we read. If you have a modern translation, you will notice that the different sections are headed up ‘Beloved’ and ‘Lover’. The section headed up ‘Beloved’ is the one which relates to us, ‘the wife’, the ‘Bride of Christ’, and the section headed up ‘Lover’ relates to the Husband and to Jesus and His thoughts about us.
The very first issue to notice is that the husband/Lord is the ‘Lover’. It is the man who is to take the lead in giving love. It is the wife’s role to respond. So often today, the media shows it the other way around and that is the first step towards disaster. The loving husband provides the security of unconditional love, which enables the wife to respond in abandoned love. That is the formula for a lasting and vibrant marriage.
The husband ‘creates the atmosphere’ which enables the wife to be released into all the joy and freedom she requires, which in turn creates ecstatic delight for her husband. It is not the wife’s role to create the security of the marriage – that is the husband’s role and the extent to which he does that – in reality, rather than theory – is the extent to which the marriage is both secure and fulfilling – both naturally and sexually.
Any marriage that does not have that ordained order is bound to be second rate at best, and disastrous at worst. That is why Paul says in Ephesians – “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25).
I will be concentrating on Christ being the Lover and us, the Beloved – but those of you who are married, do take time to read the whole book slowly and in detail and see how it relates to your position. Then put it into practice and enjoy a marriage enrichment.
However, until we spiritually ‘fall in love’ with Jesus, we will never experience the full joy of our Christian life. Christianity is based upon historical facts but it takes on a whole new dimension when I personalise it and become involved body, soul, mind and spirit in a loving intimate relationship with Jesus.
When I ‘see’ Him as the One who loved me so much that He died for me – I want to delight in His love which is far more wonderful than wine.
