Psalm 91:1

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

We need to remember that.

So often we start well but then, as circumstances change or challenges come, we move away from His protection. We panic instead of relying completely upon Him; we feel convinced He doesn’t know or doesn’t care and so move off in our own strength and trust in something or someone else.

If you think about it logically, though – that has got to be ‘silly’, hasn’t it? We leave behind all the security and help of the Almighty, Omnipotent, Omnipresent God, the miracle-working Creator, and trust some other temporary, human and finite resource or ourselves.

We live in a real, present and visible world and the invisible Infinite seems very distant, doesn’t it? But can I let you into a divine secret? What we do on earth is not the whole picture. God is much more interested in our character than in our convenience. He is not so much concerned with what we do or achieve but with who we are. God holds our every breath in the palm of His hand. We live by His will and His mercy alone.

As Jesus reminded us in the parable of the rich farmer who made great plans to sit down, rest and enjoy his wealth – God said, You fool! Tonight you will die.” Then what? (see Luke 12:13-21)

What are you working towards? Success? The accumulation of wealth? The acquisition and storage of things? All these will pass away – what about you?

Who are you? Does God really feature in your life or is He just a terminus to which you think you are inevitably heading?

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Do you notice the order? First, you must dwell, then you will rest. “He will save you from the fowler’s snare… You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day… A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand but it will not come near you” (v 3, 5 & 7).

I find it hilarious that Satan quoted verses 11 and 12 when he tempted Jesus, the Son of God (Matthew 4:5-6). “For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways, they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” He stopped there but the Psalm goes on… “You will tread upon the lion and the cobra, you will trample the great lion and the serpent (v 13). No wonder he stopped short. He would have given Jesus the right to defeat him. (But Jesus knew the Scripture anyway.)

That very same power and authority given to the Christ has also been given to us through the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. We know that nothing can harm us in any way beyond what God our Father allows – but you have to remain under His protection – you must continue to “dwell in the shelter of the Most High.”

Then, even you can trample on the serpent and all the enemy’s plans.

Tell me, where are you going to ‘dwell’ today?
