2 Peter 1:16-18
“We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His Majesty. For He received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this Voice that came from Heaven when we were with Him on the sacred mountain.”
Peter never forgot it.
Peter, with the brothers James and John, was privileged to be there. It was not only special; it was a moment in time, a moment in eternity. The four had gone up the mountain together and God chose that moment to reveal something special about His Son, Jesus, that they would never forget. God had spoken before at Jesus’ baptism (see Luke 3:21-22); now He was going to do even more.
First, Jesus had two visitors – Moses and Elijah – who talked with Him about what was to happen in Jerusalem. Then, as with the Wedding in Cana, the best was kept to last. Jesus was transfigured and the cloud took Moses and Elijah away. Peter had wanted to treat all 3 the same, but Father revealed that Jesus is Someone Else. Totally Unique. He is His One and Only Son with whom He is delighted. Peter immediately knew he had spoken too soon (see Matthew 17).
But he never forgot that moment. That awesome moment when he had a small glimpse into Reality – the Truth that Jesus was indeed more than just a man, more than just a prophet or rabbi and he had a wee peek of His glory.
How do you try and describe such events? How can the finite understand the Infinite, let alone describe it, and that accurately? One thing is for sure: Peter would never be the same again. Oh, he may fail; he may deny Christ in his time of utter despair – but he would never forget. He loved Jesus so much he could not handle His rejection and death, let alone being taken prisoner and crucified like a common criminal. (See also Matthew 16:22-23.)
Now after the Resurrection and Pentecost, he was able to write his true feelings. No more hiding, it was time to tell you the truth. “What we are telling you is not a dream; it is not wishful thinking or an attempt to hoodwink or indoctrinate you. It is the Truth.”
“We saw Him. We lived with Him. We didn’t hear the stories second-hand. We were eyewitnesses. We saw it with our very own eyes – you can trust us.”
“Listen, Jesus is not just a man – He is God. We saw some of His glory – it was awesome. There is nothing on earth that could possibly compare. We’ve seen the pomp and ceremony of Kings and Caesars. That is nothing compared to what we saw.”
“Just plain and simple honour, glory and majesty.”
When you’ve seen them, you will never be the same again either.
One thing is certain – more sure than even death and taxes. Next time He comes – it won’t be as a Baby in a manger, but …
Everyone in the whole world will see Jesus in all His majesty and glory. (See also Matthew 16:27; 24:27, 30-31; 1 Thessalonians 4:16.)
It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!
Yes, everyone who is living or who has ever lived. Awesome reality, isn’t it?
Are you ready for it?
Is there someone you can tell so that they can get ready, too?
