2 Peter 2:1-2
“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Sovereign Lord who bought them – bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.”
Unfortunately he was right, and it still happens today.
There are many false teachers and false prophets around.
That is why I have written this book. To try and show the consistency of Scripture and to encourage you to read every part of it, rather than just bits. If you want to know the Truth, get to know your Bible. Read it from cover to cover. Then take time to study it. Whenever you read something or listen to a talk or sermon, check it out.
It never ceases to amaze me how many people go to church without taking their Bibles. How do you know what the preacher says is true if you can’t check it out? If he reads from a book which is not the Bible, how would you know? That’s why I love the Bereans – “Now the Bereans … received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true” (Acts 17:11).
That’s terrific. They didn’t just take his word for it – they checked it out. So should we. Does it line up with Scripture? If not, flag it away. Stick to the Truth and the Scriptures. Throw the rest away. Don’t allow your experiences and others’ thoughts and traditions to frame and mould your theology and be careful that you don’t force yours onto others either.
The bottom line is always: does it line up with the Scriptures? Is it part of the ‘Ring of Truth’? Most of the challenges in the Church today come from an ignorance of the Bible. Interestingly enough, it is usually an ignorance of the Old Testament – the very same Scriptures the Bereans used to check up on Paul. Guess what – the Scriptures haven’t changed. (See also 2 Timothy 3:15-16 & read again Psalm 119.)
May I encourage you? The Scriptures represent Truth. They are the yardstick and the plumb line against which everything else has to be checked. They are not for us to judge or debate, they are to help us clarify truth – for us to check our thinking with, so that we can stay on course.
They are the rock and foundation upon which we build our values, principles and life. They enable us to make course corrections along our pathway.
Don’t allow others to force their views upon you unless they line up with what the Bible says. If they do, then you can be sure that if you follow and observe the instructions, you will obtain life, hope and fruitfulness.
How many times have you read the Bible all the way through?
When are you going to start again? Why not start again January 1st next year?
