Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, let us reason together,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”

It is still true today.

This book records the visions of Isaiah which he had towards the end of the reigns of the Kings of Israel, from Uzziah to Hezekiah, just before the exile.

The first starts, “Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the Lord has spoken: ‘I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me’” (v 2). God then goes on to reveal the state of the nation: rebellious, corrupt, sick, injured, wounded and devastated and they thought they were ‘God’. They offered sacrifices but these were just token gestures, their hearts weren’t in it; they were done out of duty not obedience, out of mechanical ritual not love, out of self-sufficiency and self-righteousness rather than respect for God, His holiness and His righteousness.

“Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to Me” (v 13). “Take your evil deeds out of My sight! Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow” (v 16–17).

Sounds like today, doesn’t it? Mankind hasn’t changed – neither has God. Mankind has been corrupt and got progressively worse from the time of the expulsion from the Garden of Eden. God was holy and righteous before the creation of the world to the time of Isaiah, and He is still the same today. God is Holy. God is Love. God was ‘Love’ at creation, He was ‘Love’ in the days of Isaiah and He is still ‘Love’ now.

Here He says, “Come now, let us reason together – though your sins are like scarlet they shall be white as snow, though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool” (v 18). God has always been a God of Love. He has always wanted to see mankind restored to the position He intended for us to enjoy in the first place. He also knew we couldn’t make it on our own. So He devised His plan. He would pay the price – He would become the Sacrifice, Himself, in the Person of Jesus Christ – “The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)

This is the ‘Ring of Truth’! “God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:19). Yes, we are sinful; yes, God cannot bear to look upon our sins; yes, we are totally incapable of rescuing ourselves; physically, emotionally, intellectually or spiritually. So God intervened on our behalf. He took our sins, washed us in His precious blood so that we come out “white as snow”, “like wool”. Beautifully clean.

Have you ever experienced that? If not, ask Him now. If you have – experience it again. Ask Him to wash you clean once more and rejoice in that cleansing flood.

Remember this – Once you are washed, you are clean. ‘As pure as driven snow.’

John reminds us, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and will purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

As Jesus said to the leper – “Be clean!” (see Matthew 8:1–4)
