Song of Songs 5:10
My Lover is radiant and ruddy, outstanding among ten thousand.
What is yours like?
I’m ending our look at the Song of Songs here although there are another 3 chapters but can I encourage you to read them all?
Yesterday, we were given a glimpse as to how much Jesus loves us, how He knows us in intimate detail and not only accepts us but actually delights in us.
Now we turn to the wife’s response. I said yesterday that as husbands ‘prove’ their love for their wives and increasingly delight in them so their wives will respond in even greater and more exciting ways. Here we get a glimpse of the type of response which will result.
Her opening expression is – He is “outstanding among ten thousand.” What an exclamation. What confirmation of marital fidelity. She is not the least bit ‘interested’ in anyone else – for by comparison, all others pale into insignificance. There is no one who can register any similarity.
Her whole gaze is taken up by her own husband and she then delights in him ‘inch by inch’. There is no hint here of possessive compliance or flattery – this is ravenous delight. There are no holds barred. She is expressing her total devotion and ecstatic pride in her husband and telling everyone else to stand back – she is off-limits – because she has found, knows and enjoys her own husband.
She has no difficulty describing him. She has no need for feelings of guilt nor is there any hint of shame. She adores him and every inch of him. She concludes, “His mouth is sweetness itself; HE IS ALTOGETHER LOVELY. This is my Lover, this my Friend” (v 16).
Is your husband “altogether lovely”? He should be – try telling him so and see his response over time. He should also be your ‘best friend’. You should enjoy just spending time with him – in his company and it should be a growing delight.
Listen. This should be our response to Jesus, too. Look into His eyes of love … look at His hands and feet – showing the marks of unconditional love and total commitment to your good. Look at His head bearing the thorn-pierced scars, for you, my friend, for you. Look at the sword-slashed side from which flowed the blood that secured forgiveness for your sins.
Yes, go through verses 10–16 often and learn how to express your love for Him.
He is indeed “outstanding among ten thousand.” “HE IS ALTOGETHER LOVELY. (He) is My Lover… (and) My Friend”.
Take a few moments right now to express your love to Him.
