Isaiah 9:6
For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the Government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah’s Christmas present to us all.
He prophesied the Messiah in Chapter 7 when he gave us a sign – “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with Child and will give birth to a Son, and will call Him Immanuel” (v 14) - which means “God with us.”
The Child is now born – and is a Son. The Government is on His shoulders and He is “called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His Government and Peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over His kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty (The Lord of Hosts) will accomplish this” (v 6–7).
The chapter starts in despair but by verse 7 is in glory.
“Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress” (v 1).
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned” (v 2).
Light is always accentuated by darkness – it is never extinguished by it. No. Light always displaces darkness. We always appreciate God more in the dark times. When evil appears to triumph, God shines forth His truth, love, life and victory in even greater measure.
Listen, Jesus is alive today. The very same Child, the same Son, the same Light is here for you, today. He longs to be your “Wonderful Counsellor.” Bringing sympathy, empathy, comfort, health, wisdom and wholeness to you. He longs to prove to be the “Mighty God” to you. Let Him give you His best. Trust Him to work it out. Give over the situation to Him and get out of the way and He will prove to be the “Mighty God.”
He longs to be your “Everlasting Father.” No matter what your past experiences were with your earthly father, let God be your “Everlasting Father.” He is love. He is there for you. He is on your side. He provides you with self-worth and significance. You are His child and He will never leave you, nor forsake you. He is both omnipotent and omnipresent. (See also Hebrews 13:5–6.)
Let Him be the “Prince of Peace” to you today. Give over to Him all your fears, all your failures, all your disappointments, all your hurts and all your anxiety. Let Him speak peace into your life right now. Put all those issues beside His resurrection power and they must flee. Then replace them with His peace, which surpasses all understanding.
Don’t rationalise it away. Don’t rush off into the busyness of your day.
Stop and let Him minister deep into your life right now.
Stop. Stay sitting down and wait for the “Prince of Peace” to finish His work – then go and face the day in His strength and victory.
It’s a present from God to you for today.
