Isaiah 11:1
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
Isaiah had a fixation with David.
David was the greatest human being that had ever lived and his father’s name was Jesse. By the time Isaiah was on the scene, David, of course, was dead but his memory lived on. Everyone loved and honoured David but unfortunately, none of the kings who succeeded him got anywhere near his quality of character.
Although David had indeed sunk to terrifying, catastrophic lows of adultery and murder, his heart was humble and contrite before both men and God.
Isaiah prophesied by the Spirit of God that there would yet be one more heir who would come out of Jesse’s generational line – his family tree – who would not only be outstanding but would also change the whole of history and the face of the entire earth. From the family tree would come a Branch – a Righteous Branch who would bear fruit. He would be Great David’s greater Son – JESUS.
“The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him – the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord – and He will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what He sees with His eyes, or decide by what He hears with His ears; but with righteousness He will judge the needy, with justice He will give decisions for the poor of the earth” (v 2–4).
“Righteousness will be His belt and faithfulness the sash around His waist” (v 5).
The vision then goes on to describe what some see as ‘utopia’ but it is more than that, because this is not a ‘pipe-dream’ – an impossible wish – This will happen.
“The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat” (v 6).
“They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea” (v 9).
Jesus came as a Baby, in the line of Jesse, as the Son of a virgin named Mary. He lived a life of righteousness as a servant and became obedient to death, even death on the cross.
But! He arose from the dead, ascended into Heaven and sits on the Throne at the right-hand of God the Father
And one day He is coming back.
Not then as a Baby, not then as a servant – not then to die. He is coming back in awesome majesty and blazing glory as the great King and righteous Judge with all His angels with Him (see Matthew 24:30–31).
Get ready, it won’t be long now. And all these things will take place.
Are you ready? Are you excited? Because you should be both.
