Micah 1:3-4

“Look! The Lord is coming from His dwelling place; He comes down and treads the high places of the earth. The mountains melt beneath Him and the valleys split apart, like wax before the fire, like water rushing down a slope.”

Watch out.

So often the prophets of the Old Testament were used by God to warn of impending judgement and danger. Interestingly enough, but sadly, we see the ‘pagan Nineveh’ responded while the ‘chosen Israel and Jerusalem’ ignored the messages. The prophets’ ‘prophecies’ were, however, designed not so much to foretell the future but forth tell the Word of the Lord. That was why Jonah could relax.

As we see from verse 1, Micah prophesied through the reign of 3 kings of Judah – same prophet and message – different kings. God’s Word is constant regardless of who reigns on earth. That’s worth remembering today too, isn’t it?

So often the prophet’s role was to remind the people of who God is. That He is the Holy One. The Omniscient One – All-knowing One. The Omnipresent One – The Ever-present One. (The Only One who is everywhere all the time and at the same time.) The Omnipotent One – the All-powerful One.

Israel kept ‘creating God in their image’. They reduced Yahweh to no more than one of the gods of the surrounding nations – no more than carvings out of wood or stone. The prophets constantly reminded and challenged the people to come back to basics. To remember who the God of Israel was. The others were not gods at all but just figments of man’s imagination and the enemy. God is Holy, Holy, Holy. Totally unique and awesome in power, splendour and righteousness.

You see, we will never get life into proper perspective until we get God into proper perspective. If God remains for me no more than a modern day Father Christmas who just gives me all the gifts I want, or a genie to whom I cry to get my desires and needs met or to immediately get me out of the trouble or the mess I get myself into, very soon I am going to be bitterly disappointed and eventually totally disillusioned.

The God of Israel, the Creator of the Universe, our God, is none of these. He is totally above my petty desires and whims. Read again our verses for today – because God hasn’t changed.

The mountains still melt like wax before Him. It is bad news for the wicked but great news for us. When we are being attacked by the enemy or scorned and mocked by the ungodly, or find there are mountains in our righteous path – all we need do is cry out to the Lord and watch and see. The mountains shall be removed. Just like wax before fire.

But please – remember who God is. Honour and respect Him.

Worship Him in the beauty of His holiness. (See also Psalm 97.)
