Job 19:25-26
“I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end He will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.”
One of the most famous passages from Handel’s Messiah.
One of the ‘rocks’ of our foundational Christian creeds. A man at the end of his tether, oppressed by his wife, his friends and the devil delivers to us one of the most glorious and profound hopes of the whole of our Christian belief system.
It also ‘suggests’ what we read later. Christ will come back. He will stand upon the Mount of Olives. Yes, one day He will return to earth, to take us to be with Him forever (see Zechariah 14:4). It’s a “Ring of Truth”!
This statement was even more profound when Job uttered it. He lived at a time when people did not ‘see God and live.’ The holy, pure, Infinite God would not allow sin into His Presence. Man, by nature, fallen and sinful, had no hope of entering His Presence. More than that, he could not even hope to see Him and live. Yet, here we have a poor miserable wretch, covered in boils, clothed in rags, with ashes on his head, exclaiming that one day he is going to see God.
Not only that, the inference is twofold:
Firstly - he believes the Redeemer’s coming will probably happen before he dies.
Secondly, for good measure - even if, perchance, he should die and his body decompose in its grave - even so - IN HIS FLESH he is going to see God and, again by inference, in pure, wholesome, clean flesh.
No wonder his friends had trouble with him. He was really getting carried away with himself. Only the arrogant and wicked would allow themselves the privilege of thinking this way. ‘Yes, we’re right, Job is not as pure as we thought. His riches have made him arrogant. Consequently, all that has happened to him is fully justified and the sooner he realises this the better. You can’t mock God. You cannot see God. If you mock, you will come to ruin. If you see Him, you will die.’
“No. No. No.” cries Job. “This isn’t the end. God is eternal and just. Furthermore, He created men from the dust of the earth in the first place, so a resurrection in flesh is a ‘piece of cake’ to God.”
Our physical life on earth is not the ‘be all and end all’ of it. I have an eternal never-ending destiny and God is going to give it to me.
Be encouraged. You will probably never be called to go through what Job did.
Take courage from his words. The Redeemer, his Redeemer (our Redeemer) does live.
After all, he is right. (See also 1 Corinthians 15:17 & 20.)
In the end “we shall see Him” and “be like Him” (1 John 3:2). Hallelujah.
