1 Timothy 6:6-10

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

Are you content?

Are you really content with your lot? If not – what will make you happy? Another $1,000 or $1m? A new car, a new house, a holiday home or a boat?

Paul didn’t envision that we would grit our teeth and say, “Yes, sure, I’m content” while all the time determined to enhance our situation.

Listen – stop a minute – are you really content? Are you? God is challenging you today – are you content? Or are you still motivated by and striving for something more?

Beware – chasing money is an illusion. Don’t throw your life away for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Don’t use up tomorrow’s energy, rest and peace trying to secure a brighter future. Like so many you may never live to appreciate it.

Many years ago a man said to me, “Yes, I want to become involved in your Cell Group Ministry. But right now I’m working as hard as I can to become self-supporting. I’ll see you in November.” Which November? I’m still waiting.

Live today, enjoying all the blessings God has poured into your lap. Take time out to smell the roses, taste the flavour of the fruit, count the different shades of green in a single tree, run barefooted through the grass or sand, look at the dew drops on the flower, look up at the sky and smile at the blueness or work out faces in the clouds.

Listen to the children playing, watch your family enjoying themselves (if they are). Smile at your neighbours. Watch the other drivers as they go past while you are sat waiting at the traffic lights and see if they ‘match’ their cars.

Thank God for your life, your health, your strength, your family, your relations, your friends, your Cell Group, and your Pastor (as well as your ‘material blessings’).

“The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” Yes, you are right. I am going to mention it. It covers impulse buying. Spending sprees and gambling. It creates pressure to keep up with our peers and worldly values. It enlarges our overdraft and credit card balances.

It is also responsible for lies, covetousness, envy, jealousy and anger, disappointments, frustration and rage, as well as broken relationships, bitterness, gossip, slander, robbery, stealing, and murder.

Each gets worse than the last. It robs us of our peace with God, harmony in the home, external friendships and tranquillity at work. Contentment disappears; our walk with God slows and eventually stops altogether.

God wants you set free. “Godliness with contentment is great gain” – it brings peace, joy and freedom. A ‘stress-free’ lifestyle.

It’s worth getting this one right.

How are you doing? Really?
