Job 38:4
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.”
This chapter begins one of the most exciting passages of Scripture.
It is God’s response to Job, Elihu and the 3 friends. Yes, they all heard His audible voice. And God’s response carries on for 4 chapters.
He started by speaking to them about creation and His work in it. He began with the formation of the earth and stars, then on through the power and control of the sea and its depths and then got them to consider the various types of weather.
Next, He described His creation of the animals; from the lion, mountain goat, wild donkey and ox through to the ostrich and horse. From there, He went on to highlight the hawk and the eagle.
Finally, He challenged Job to reply but by then Job realised he had met more than his match and wisely chose to keep quiet. The Lord then discussed His glory and showed Job that he was puny in strength, not only compared to God, but even to the wild animals.
You really need to read Chapters 38-41 to capture the force of God’s reply. It is very exciting as well as enlightening. We even get a glimpse of who we are compared to who He is. It is also good to read a commentary on creation from the Creator Himself. His point is well made. There is no comparison between God and man and we do well to sit down and to reflect on that.
Today, ‘man’ has elevated ‘himself’ so high that he believes he is god on the inside: We have only to find our true selves and we shall find that we are god. Well, if you feel like that, or know someone who does, read or get them to read Job 38-41.
That attitude reminds me of an open-air preacher. As usual, he was used to verbal abuse, opposition and heckling. He recounted the story of one such man who shouted at him, “I know what I’m going to say to God when I meet Him.” “So do I” replied the preacher - “You’ll say - ‘Yes, Lord’ and ‘Amen’.”
Which is another way of agreeing with Job and saying as he did, “My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes” (Job 42:5-6).
In the 1960’s, a book was written entitled, ‘Your God is too small.’ It is as relevant now as it was then. Our problem is that we make God in our image instead of allowing Him to make us in His.
Tell me - How big is your God, really?
Is He almighty? The Creator of the Universe?
Job’s God can be yours, too. Right now.
Meet the Huge Eternal Omnipotent God of the Cosmos. And worship Him alone.
