“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Are you teaching a younger one?
Timothy was blessed – he had a Christian grandmother and then Paul mentored him. I am so grateful to the Lord for my Christian parents who also trained me as an infant in the Holy Scriptures. It never ceases to amaze me how many Scriptures must have been stored up in those early years, which have been a tremendous resource for me and guide for daily living.
As parents, we should never abdicate our responsibility for bringing up our children to know, love and serve our Saviour by leaving it to others like Sunday School teachers. We can never blame them if our kids don’t follow the Lord.
But for both them and us, let us never forget the impact we have on infants. We may never know how significant our influence for God can be if it is given naturally in love. We are not talking about religion here, but a walk with Jesus and the natural flow-on from sharing together.
Children shouldn’t be talked down to or preached at. They want to see us ‘live’ Jesus. Our walk has to match our talk or it is purely hypocrisy, and our children will either see through it, or get confused and turn off. Consistency is the key.
Also remember to encourage your children to memorise Scripture. “All Scripture is God-breathed.” The Holy Spirit is the Author of it all. Yes, there is a variety of authors and yes, they do span many centuries, but the Holy Spirit maintains the ‘Ring of Truth’. That is why I can write a book like this. Because there is an obvious ‘Ring of Truth’ running right through the Bible.
“[It] is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” Why is it that we would rather read a novel or the daily newspaper? Yet it is only Scripture that can ‘straighten us out’ and point us to righteousness. It is Scripture that is Truth and it is the Truth that sets us free – and yet so often we fill our minds with non-edifying material. We laugh at junk food and junk mail but blithely accept junk information from newspapers, periodicals and gossip columns, let alone films, T.V., emails and the Internet.
Notice also that the Scriptures are given to us “so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” God has provided all that is needed to be “thoroughly equipped for every good work.” It therefore behoves us to follow through on it and be sufficiently “equipped” for the work God has called us to.

What “good work” has God called and anointed you to do?
Don’t forget to ‘line up’ your study and calling at times, too. In other words, keep studying all you need to in order to become “thoroughly equipped” – the best you can in your ministry.
