2 Chronicles 3:1
“Then Solomon began to build the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mt Moriah where the Lord had appeared to his father David. It was on the threshing floor of Araunah, the Jebusite, the place provided by David.”
David has died and been buried.
Solomon had inherited the plans for the Temple from him and we find that Solomon got on with his work straight away.
He must have ‘blinked’ when he got a glimpse into the magnitude of the task. Just consider it: 70,000 men needed to help carry all the stones. Those massive stones weighing tons, to be brought up from the quarries into Jerusalem. 80,000 more were needed to cut the stones to the exact shape of the templates. Over them he had to appoint 3,600 foremen. Then there were all the engravers, the builders, the sculptors, the carpenters, goldsmiths, silversmiths, blacksmiths, and sailors, etc., etc., etc.
It is interesting that God used the King of Tyre to help. He was the one God had used to help build a palace for David (see 2 Samuel 5:11). He had provided cedar logs, carpenters and stonemasons. Solomon remembered the friendship and help of the King of Tyre, Hiram, and wrote asking for assistance in the construction of the Temple. Once more, Hiram was delighted to provide help and play a part in the project.
But what of the site? The part of Mt Moriah, the threshing floor bought by David when he wanted to offer a sacrifice for his sin against God in holding a census of the men over 20 years old. Mt Moriah where David’s sin was atoned for and the plague stopped after 3 days.
What a place of history. What a place of Biblical significance. What a phenomenal choice. The same Mt Moriah - where Abraham had offered up Isaac - Abraham had said, “The Lord will provide” a lamb in substitute. A ram was found and sacrificed on his behalf (see Genesis 22:14).
The same Mt Moriah - that would become the site of Calvary. The place where the Son of God died to take away the sin of the world. It was also the site of the most phenomenal building of all time. The Temple made to house the Name of the God of Israel. The place where sacrifices were made for thousands of years for the atonement of the sins of the people.
Is God a God of order and symbolism or what? He used the very self-same place throughout generations for the forgiveness of sins.
The Ark of the Covenant, which stood in the Most Holy Place - Holy of Holies - with the ‘Mercy Seat’ cover where the Blood of the Atonement was spilt - was lost before Jesus went to Calvary on Mt Moriah. Yet, I have heard a rumour that the Israeli Government has mounted secret excavations, which have recovered the Ark - guess where? Beneath Mt Moriah.
Could it be that the blood of Christ, which fell from the Cross to the ground, soaked through a crack in the rock to fall between the cherubim of the ‘Mercy Seat’ - the place used to pour out the Blood on the Day of Atonement?
If that is true, it should come as no real surprise, should it?
Listen - the final, all sufficient, fully efficacious blood sacrifice was made in the very place prescribed by God.
Or as the Revised Standard Version says, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided” (Genesis 22:14).
The ram for Isaac - The sacrifices for the people - The Blood of Jesus for us.
All on the very same ‘HILL’ (Mount).
