2 Chronicles 5:13-14

The trumpeters and singers joined in unison, as with one voice, to give praise and thanks to the Lord. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments they raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang:

“He is good; His love endures forever.”

Then the Temple of the Lord was filled with a cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the Glory of the Lord filled the Temple of God.

Sound familiar? (See January 31.)

There, Moses completed the Tabernacle, but could not approach it because a cloud had settled and the Glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle (see Exodus 40:35). Here, once more it fills the Temple.

Can you imagine the scene? The building had taken 7 years to complete. Hundreds of thousands of people had been employed during those 7 years. It was probably the most magnificent building ever built in the whole of human endeavour, even including today’s edifices. Just the value of the gold used (excluding the value of the silver, bronze and cedar) would be beyond calculation at today’s prices, and it looked magnificently impressive and majestic.

At last, the day came when it was finally finished. Not just the outside, but inside as well, together with all the detailed furnishings. Solomon then had all the bounty from David’s victories brought and placed in the treasury.

Next, he summoned all the elders of Israel and the chiefs of the Tribes by royal decree to gather in Jerusalem to watch and celebrate with sacrifices. The record says that so many sheep and cattle were sacrificed that day that they lost count, and didn’t bother to record the number as there were so many.

That was then followed by the most moving moment of all, when the Ark of the Covenant - Moses’ Ark of the Covenant - was brought in by the Levites and carried into the Most Holy Place in the Temple.

Just think of the emotions: The excitement, the sheer joy and electricity. This was history in the making. This was truly a ‘moment in time’. The priests consecrated themselves and then those who were musicians stood on the east side dressed in fine linen and began the musical experience with cymbals, harps and lyres. There were also 120 trumpeters who, it says, joined with the singers in unison.

Whenever I’m singing and hear a trumpet sound, shivers go up my spine. I’m sure there were many shivers in many spines that day too. They sang with joy, “He is good; His love endures forever.”

Then, without warning, that supremely awesome moment arrived when the Temple was filled with a cloud. Not a damper on a sunny day. But a glorious cloud. A cloud, which brought peace, security and indescribable joy ... God had arrived.

Wow! When God arrives, our service is impossible. Can you visualise the scene?

Have you ever experienced it? I pray you will one day.

For when God arrives, all else pales into total insignificance.

As the old chorus says:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His Glory and Grace.
