Revelation 1:12-18
“I turned around to see the Voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was Someone ‘like a Son of Man’, dressed in a robe reaching down to His feet with a golden sash around His chest. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and His Voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as though dead. Then He placed His right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I AM the First and the Last. I AM the Living One; I was dead, and behold I AM alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.’”

This is the ‘Ring of Truth’!
Jesus is both Son of Man and Son of God. The Eternal qualities that Isaiah saw in “the Lord” “in the year King Uzziah died” (see Isaiah 6) belong to both the Father and the Son. “Before Abraham was born, I AM”, said Jesus (John 8:58).
Yes, Jesus is not just the ‘Baby of Christmas’ of whom the angels sang. He is also the Creator, Sustainer and Maintainer of the Universe.
It is very important that we see Him as He really is – or get a glimpse of it at least. He is not just a special man, nor a great moral teacher. He has to be God to you, or He remains a liar, a deceiver or mentally unstable – a crank or insane. He is totally otherworldly.
The Hebrews believed that you could not see God and live (see Exodus 33:18-20). No wonder John “fell at His feet as though dead.” He had received a vision of the Divine. He had been given a glimpse of Christ’s awesome Glory and Majesty.
Thomas saw a bit. He saw the nail prints in His resurrected body and exclaimed, “My Lord and My God!” (John 20:28) Paul had an encounter on the road to Damascus, and cried, “Who are You, Lord?” (Acts 9:5) Peter, James and John saw some, too (see Matthew 17 & 2 Peter 1:17-18).
This is absolutely vital for each of us. Because until we recognise Jesus for who He really is, we will treat Him as an equal or a ‘genie of the lamp’. Yes, of course, Jesus wants to be our friend. Yes, of course, He is our Saviour, but He is also the Sovereign, Almighty, Omnipotent, Creator God and Lord of all. He is Holy, Holy, Holy. There is none to compare with Him.
The enemy is not an equal opposite force. He is a fallen, created being. All the other gods are man-made. The Biblical God is unique. There is none like Him. There is no contest. We need to remember that. He existed before time and creation. He has always been. Jesus, the Word, has always been. The Spirit has always been. The Trinity, the Triune God has always existed.
What arrogance we display when we treat God or Jesus as an equal or with disdain. He holds the very breath of our life in His hands. Until we fall “at His feet as though dead”, we have never seen nor really understood who He is.
May I encourage you to stop and linger for a few moments this morning and ponder who Jesus really is? Read today’s verses again and let them invade your soul and spirit. You may need to repent of some actions or attitudes towards Him but it will be well worthwhile getting your view of Him back into proper perspective.
As you do, you will hear Him say to you afresh, “Do not be afraid, I AM the First and the Last. I AM the Living One; I was dead and behold I AM alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.”
Guess what? – It’ll change your day.
It should also change your life.
