Titus 3:9-11

“But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.”

Does it really matter?

How many angels can stand on a pinhead at one time? I don’t know and I don’t care.

We argue and debate about such trivial issues, don’t we? Some people seem to be obsessed with intrigue, and unless a satisfactory answer is found for them, you can never move on or discuss real issues.

Paul says don’t waste your time on it. The older I get, the less I am prepared to waste time on folk who are either not serious or not open. Having been involved with the Alpha Courses now for a while, I realise more and more how Christianity is relevant only to people who are ready. We can do all we can to help but some are simply not going to be open at that time.

We must never fall into the trap of compromise in order to ‘win’. Jesus had to let people go. He didn’t chase after the rich young ruler and say, “Oh, sorry, let’s reconsider what I said. Let’s talk this through and find an acceptable compromise.” Jesus, though very sad, let him go (see Matthew 19:16-26).

I can’t save anyone else. My faith won’t cover anyone else. It is totally personal and they have to make their own God-given choice. Most controversial people are still unsaved. Controversy is not fruit of the Spirit.

There is a lot of debate (often well-meaning) over who the antichrist is or will be. If we look at the subject in the context of history and the world, there have already been many candidates and there will be many more. To lose friends over such an issue is unproductive.

What is more important is that we should be preparing for the Coming of the King (the timing of which is again another hotly debated subject). The issue is that Jesus is coming again in Glory; this time with His angels and every eye will see Him. Hallelujah!

But whether I am alive at the time or not won’t change the fact. Nor should it change my expectation and excited anticipation. It is better that I prepare to meet Him today, rather than plan for a specific speculated ‘Day’.

The important issues are not cosmetic – they are how to improve my personal relationship with Jesus and with those around me – my family, neighbours, friends and colleagues.

The version is not the issue, the lifestyle is. The translation is not the issue – whether I read it and put the truth into practice is.

Rather let us encourage one another as we see His Day coming.

Don’t waste your time on troublemakers (pagan or so-called ‘Christian’), instead go and help the seekers who are lost but trying to find spiritual reality and see them rejoice at the Good News.
