Colossians 1:15-20
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created:things in Heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the Head of the Body, the Church; He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in Heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross.”
Paul agrees with John. It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!
This is one of the most important declarations in the whole of Scripture as it helps us understand the Deity of Christ. Yes, Paul was talking about Jesus. Many people have struggled and do struggle with these vital issues – The Trinity, the Humanity of Jesus and the Divinity of Jesus.
We see from this passage that it is not a new problem or unique to this generation. John states in the opening sentence of his Gospel narrative, “In the beginning was the Word” (John 1:1). It is deliberate. It was to correlate with, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Jesus is unique – He was not created. He has existed for all time and eternity. The world, the angels, you and I are all created beings – yes, even Satan is a created being. (See also Ezekiel 28:13.)
The ‘Son’, the ‘Word’ is not created but self-existent. The ‘Word’ became flesh and became the ‘Son’ but the Son is as old as the Father. He is the ‘begotten’ Son through the incarnation but He was there before and at Creation. (See also John 8:58.)
Listen to Paul, “ALL things were created BY HIM and FOR HIM.” Jesus is not a lesser God or god. When Paul says, “He is the image…” – he does not mean a poor reflection or a ‘token’ example – he means an exact manifestation. He brings into ‘sight’ what is otherwise invisible.
He has total Authority – He doesn’t need to ask for it or seek it. It is His and all other authorities, whether in Heaven or on earth, are totally subject to Him.
Not only was He “before all things” but He also sustains them. “In Him all things hold together.” Without Jesus, they all crumble to oblivion.
“He is the Head of… the Church.” No human ever was, is or will be the Head of the Church, whatever people may think. Jesus is “Head of… the Church” and He has not given or delegated that authority to anyone else.
Without Jesus there is neither Heaven nor earth; there is neither life, existence nor form.
Though He was from the Beginning, He was ‘born’ in human form so that we can understand God and so that He could die to redeem the world, but He is also “the firstborn from among the dead” as He is the first to have been resurrected (and remain alive).
His resurrection proves:
1. He is God and all He said was true;
2. His sacrifice for sin was complete and accepted;
3. There is life after death;
4. We will all be resurrected – either to everlasting life in Heaven or to everlasting death in Hell;
5. He has the power, authority and ability to reconcile all things to God.
Jesus was not just a good moral teacher – He is God.
The One eternal, everlasting, omnipotent God.
