Psalm 24:1
The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world and all who live in it.
Easy to say but do you believe it? And if you do, do you practise it?
One of the problems with God is that He can see right into our hearts and minds and He doesn’t like hypocrites. Oh yes, it’s great to say – “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it” – but do you really believe that? You see, if you do, it brings a whole set of values into play. It means that it doesn’t matter who ‘owns’ the wealth of the world – it still belongs to God.
I remember working in a Ministry, the Board of which decided that it could not accept a grant from the National Lottery. I sympathised with their stance but don’t believe it was Biblical in the light of this verse. They didn’t want to allow the lottery to support the work – But “the earth is the Lord’s, and EVERYTHING in it.” Just because the enemy is temporarily usurping it doesn’t mean it is his.
If everything is the Lord’s – then EVERYTHING is His. That means 100% of my income, not just the 10% I may grudgingly give. 100% of my time, not just the 1 hour on Sunday and 2 hours during the week. 100% of my talents – not just the bit I use for His Kingdom every 6 months when asked.
It includes my house, my car, my wealth and investments, my garden and produce, my food, cupboards and my clothes. They all belong to God and having entrusted them to us, He expects us to use them for His Glory, His purposes and the extension of His Kingdom. As He is generous and has given everything we have to us, He also expects us to be generous in the way we handle those things.
“The world” – the planet. He expects us to look after it for Him. We don’t ‘own’ the world, or any of the land or sea. As the saying goes – “Does the flea own the dog on which it lives?” That is nonsense. So too with us. How many wars, battles and arguments have been fought over who owns a ‘piece of land’? How totally absurd. The earth is the Lord’s. The world is the Lord’s.
“AND ALL WHO LIVE IN IT.” Yes, not just the Christians. ALL who live in it. That means that every ‘man-jack’ of us is accountable to God (including the women). We all belong to the Lord. David knew that.
We belong to Him because He made us. Every birth is a specific miracle of God’s love. Today, everyone belongs twice. God made them and Jesus died to pay the price for them ALL – whether they believe it, accept it or not.
That means we must love them enough to tell them of the love of Jesus because they belong to God, not Satan. (See also 1 Timothy 4:10 – it’s a “Ring of Truth”!)
