Psalm 34:8-10

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him. Fear the Lord you his saints for those who fear Him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

I used not to like cheesecake.

The name put me off completely. Cheese was for eating with biscuits and apple or on toast or grated over salad. It was definitely not for putting in or on cake. Cheese is savoury, cake is sweet and thus the two can never meet.

That was, of course, until I tried it at a Sunday School teachers’ dessert evening. I scraped it off the spoon with my teeth, screwed up my face and awaited the awful fate. I blushed, my eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, my taste-buds went into ecstasy and I was found asking for … more.

I had to “taste and see” before my mind could accept that cheesecake could be palatable. No amount of recipe recital, scientific definition or even the testimony of others could dissuade me from my arrogant, ignorant, determined stance. I had to “taste and see” for myself.

The same is true of Jesus and Christianity. We can justify it from history, we can prove it to the satisfaction of the highest law courts in the land, we can even argue that it is totally logical, and yet our listeners can resolutely refuse to budge from their position. Yes, we can even share personal testimony, and that is always worthwhile because it is genuine, but it is not until they “taste and see” for themselves that they do become Christians. That is why it can be so very frustrating.

I cannot accept Christ on your behalf. I cannot make you become a Christian. My children will not become Christians because I want them to or because I make them. I can’t. They have to “taste and see” for themselves.

That’s what makes Christianity more than a religion; it is an intimate “taste and see” experience and life-long relationship with Jesus. That is why so many so called expert theologians and antagonists struggle. They can deny Christ, denounce the Bible, raise all sorts of theological doubts and cast damning accusations at poor unintelligent Christians like me, but they cannot shake us from our faith.

Why? Because the true disciples of Jesus have all passed the “taste and see” test.

Once you know Jesus personally as Saviour, and have experienced the Power of His Holy Spirit in your life, it is impossible to deny it.

And you? Have you ever made the decision to “taste and see”?

You see, if you do you will “lack no good thing.”

(And it’s a whole lot better than cheesecake.)
