Colossians 3:23-24
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Who or what are you working for?
Paul is not talking about Christian ministry here. He is talking about our everyday workplace and job or career. Oh, that we would stop compartmentalising our lives. So often we look at our lives and get to that point where we say, “Right – 10 minutes for God before I go to work each day. Work for 8-10 hours. Home and relax with family. Watch T.V. Read the paper. 2 minutes prayer and then bed. I will also give God 1 hour on Sunday each week.”
And that is our lifestyle. If we are really ‘good and religious’, we will slip in one more night a week for Small/Cell Group or mid-week Prayer Meeting. The only problem with that is that it tends to muck up the week’s schedule and restricts our play because it is the same day every week and ‘blows a whole evening’ – when it is really only for about 2 hours.
If God has made us “alive with Christ” (2:13), as we saw yesterday, how come some of our time we give to Him and some we keep to ourselves?
And while you are looking at that, look also at the ratio. It’s not even one tenth of our time. Listen, once we become saved, all our life (& time & money) belongs to God. Therefore, there is none which is ‘ours’.
When you walk outside your house – that is God let loose in the world. You take Jesus in the car, on the bus, in the train, on the ferry, into the shops, into the dentist’s chair, into the hospital, into the supermarket and into the school, your office or place of work – God has chosen your neighbourhood and street, your city, your nation and your workplace. God expects you to have an influence upon them all.
When I was an employer, I used to say to any Christian young person who joined the company, “You cannot fail to be promoted if you just ‘live like a Christian.’ That is – be honest, reliable, punctual, presentable, loyal, dependable, trustworthy, helpful, polite, courteous, and cheerful.” To my great sadness, they were very often the least reliable, least punctual, least helpful and worked out of duty rather than joy.
Listen! “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” He is our ‘Boss’. We should be the best employees anyone could wish for. Punctual, reliable, loyal and trustworthy. We should be bringing the Kingdom of God into our workplaces. What a difference there would be, if we did.
Listen, “you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.” Isn’t that enough motivation?
Stop and ask the Lord to show you what needs to change in your life to make this a reality.
