Joel 2:28-29
“And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on My servants, both men and women, I will pour out My Spirit in those days.”
There is so much in this chapter.
It starts with a vivid description of an advancing army of locusts. A challenge to remember not only the awesomeness of God but that there is also a day coming when He will judge the earth. With the challenge comes the reminder that there is still time to get right with God – but it takes humility and owning up to unrighteousness.
This is followed by the promise of God’s blessing, which comes not only because of their confession and humility but also because of His jealousy for His own Name.
In the promise He announces one of the greatest pieces of ‘Good News’ ever spoken, “I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten” (v 25). No matter what you have been through, no matter what you have had to endure, no matter what a mess you have made of your life or the years you have wasted in the past, God can ‘make them up to you.’
That is why the Christian Message is such ‘Good News’. Life doesn’t have to go on as it is and the past can be turned into a springboard for the future. God wants us to follow Him with ‘no turning back’ (and with no looking back in guilt or despair). God is the Eternal Optimist.
But, here in our verses for today, we have a new development. Throughout Scripture right up until now, we have seen evidence of the Holy Spirit. First, at creation in Genesis 1, and then throughout the rest of history we have seen the Holy Spirit given to or filling specific people at specific times for specific events: Bezalel being able to help ‘decorate’ the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:1-2); Gideon to lead the people (Judges 6:34); Samson to ‘deal with’ the Philistines (Judges 15:14); Saul to prophesy and be king (1 Samuel 10:10-11); David to be king (1 Samuel 16:13), and Isaiah for prophecy (Isaiah 61:1).
In today’s verse, the Holy Spirit is not just for a few specific people but for everyone. Not only this generation but the next as well. Sons and daughters, old men and young men, and even servants – both men and women. What a tremendous promise that was. And the promise came true, as we shall see later.
Listen – the promise is for you too. Have you been filled with the Holy Spirit? If not, why not ask Him to fill you, right now? You will never be the same again.
If you have been filled – ask for a ‘top-up’. He is longing to be allowed full reign in your life.
Go on, do it now. Your day will be different and the better for it.
