Joel 3:14
“Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision.”
This is awesome.
In this chapter we get a glimpse of the final battle.
It is a recurring theme – a ‘Ring of Truth’! Just as God brought judgement upon the earth at the time of Noah (see Genesis 6-9) so He will again. God is not a wimp, nor is He One to overlook wickedness, injustice or sin. He did deal with them and one day He will deal with them once and for all – for all time and eternity. (See also Revelation 20:11-15.)
However, it is also obvious from Scripture that forces of evil perpetrate these things – they are not totally impersonal. What we see in the physical is replicated in the spiritual. The enemy is constantly attacking the people of God – Israel and the Church, the Body of Christ.
Here, we get a view of a battle where the enemies of Israel are gathered together to fight with and annihilate the nation. But they have actually been brought together by the express purpose of God. These people who have so far ‘got away with’ their arrogance and devastation of Israel are about to receive their just reward. In their egotism they had thought that God was impotent. They were about to find out that that is a fatal misunderstanding of God.
Today, the Valley of Jehosophat – the Valley of Judgement and decision – is known as the Kidron Valley. It runs beside that part of the Wall of Jerusalem, which has St Stephen’s Gate and the ‘closed’ Golden Gates in it and separates the City from the Garden of Gethsemane.
Interestingly enough, Jesus would have had to walk through the Valley of Decision after making His decision in Gethsemane – “Your will be done” (Matthew 26:42) - and before entering the Judgement Hall of Caiaphas and going on to endure the Cross.
We should never forget that the Judgement has already been made. “Whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the Name of God’s One and Only Son” (John 3:18). Those who don’t believe have made their decision. God has yet to carry out that judgement, but it will happen.
Men and women throughout history have made their decision about God. The problem was that they failed to realise that the final judgement belongs to God, not to them. Pilate thought that he was judging Jesus Christ and said, “Don’t You realize I have power either to free You or to crucify You?” (John 19:10) But, in reality, it was Pilate ‘on trial’. Read Psalm 2 and regain the right biblical perspective.
Today, there are still multitudes in the Valley of Decision. It is our job to help them make the right one before it’s too late for them.
