Psalm 103:20
PRAISE THE LORD, YOU HIS ANGELS...
"What is man that You are mindful of him? You have made him a little lower than the angels." Psalm 8
Here, David is continuing to challenge his soul to praise the Lord. You see the Lord is worthy of praise. He doesn't need to DO ANYTHING to be worthy of praise.
HE IS worthy of praise.
David gets hold of himself and says "Soul, my soul - Praise the Lord!" Then he goes on to enumerate some very good reasons for doing so, for praising the Lord. It just seems as though, by the time he gets to verse 19, where he acknowledges that God's Kingdom has been established in Heaven, regardless of what happens here on earth, that his soul has 'caught on' and is enjoying praising the Lord to such an extent that David can now turn from his soul to outside of himself and, to whom better to turn to join him, than the angels?
The angels have the privilege of constantly moving at the bidding of the Lord, they see His face. They have chosen to serve God and do so in sinless perfection. They do so out of reverence to His majesty, power and dominion.
David acknowledges their superiority to himself. They are the mighty ones. If an angel came and sat down beside you today, as you read this, I wonder how you would feel.
I know people who pray to God to be able to meet angels because they 'know' the experience would be 'electric' to say the least! Imagine being Mary when Gabriel arrived. Imagine having to face Michael in all his splendour!
But, hey, Jesus is much higher than angels. Yes, it would be great to see or be visited by an angel - but for me - I can't wait to meet Jesus!
Yes, David recognised the power and authority of angels, but he knew more, too. There is a Name above every name. At that Name every knee shall bow whether on earth or in heaven! So as he overflows in praise and worship to God, he exclaims "Come on angels, join me!"
Praise THE LORD who is worthy of praise! No, we don't praise and worship angels - but they certainly do join us in praising the Lord. Praising the Name of Jesus.
Can you hear them joining you, today?
(Actually they do it all the time continuously - have you heard them, yet?)
