Romans 3:3
WILL THEIR LACK OF FAITH NULLIFY GOD'S FAITHFULNESS?
I sincerely hope not!
But isn't that the whole point Paul is trying to make here? (And so am I during this month!) Our lack of faith, lack of obedience, lack of faithfulness or lack of anything - will NEVER change God's faithfulness. As Paul says later - "Let God be true and every man a liar."
Surely the greatest example for us today is seen in the Jewish people - God's specially chosen people. The Old and New Testaments are full of evidence that they were fickle, unreliable, independent, volatile, unrepentant, stubborn and rebellious - but both then and today we know, and the world knows - they are special people. Not so much because they are clever, rich or powerful (though many are) but because there is 'something' about them - they are a people with a destiny.
How the future will map out in our day is uncertain, but we do know this - they will always be on the world's stage, right in the centre. Other empires come and go, but Israel's uniqueness remains the same. Rulers have tried to exterminate them for centuries - Hitler was only one of many - others too, have come and gone and Syria has joined the forefront of the list. Whether President Assad likes it or not 'he' will never - "drive them into the sea!" (The Egyptians tried that and look what happened to them!). What is more, Israel is still the chosen people of God!
Why? Because even their lack of faith will not nullify God's faithfulness.
Can I put it this way - if God ever gives up on Israel - then we may question whether God's faithfulness can be nullified - but history is on our side!
We are no better than Israel, and yet with Paul we can trust and say with total confidence - "No! Our lack of faithfulness will NEVER nullify God's faithfulness."
