November Topic: EMMANUEL - GOD WITH US |
WE HAVE SEEN HIS GLORY! Let's spend November together looking at the fact that God longs to be with us and for us to spend time with Him. |
Genesis 39:2
THE LORD WAS WITH JOSEPH
Not so much, this time, that Joseph 'walked with God' but that the 'Lord was with Joseph.'
I wonder when Joseph first realised it, and I wonder how many times he had severe doubts about it too! Joseph, by this time, has already been sold as a slave in Egypt. He had been humiliated by his brothers by being put into a hole, a water cistern; then sold as a slave to the Ishmaelite merchants, who in turn traded him in for cash to Potiphar.
Tell me, if you had been Joseph, would you feel that the Lord was with you? Would your fine Christian friends come around and say "How blessed you are. The Lord must really be with you!" Or is it more likely that they would tell you, that you must be 'way outside of the will of God!' How very glib our comments and discernment are at times.
We want everything to go just nice and easy now we are Christians, but often it doesn't work out that way, does it?
Joseph was, in fact, heading for an even bigger test right then! Potiphar's wife. Someone who was just as determined to get her man. (Or was it 'men'?) It must have gone on for weeks and ends with poor innocent Joseph in jail because of his integrity. He 'passed the test' but still ended up in clink! Yes, he had passed the test, and more than that, we read at the end of the chapter the same words we started with - 'the Lord was with Joseph.'
How quick we are to judge, aren't we? I've been where Joseph was. Tested. No not sexually, but a lot of events in my life would suggest that I was way away from the Lord's will. How careful we need to be, not to base our criticism and judgement purely upon the circumstances before us. Circumstances on their own are no guarantee that I am in, or miles away from, the will of God for my life.
But remember this - no matter what the circumstances are now, or in the future, you can still be certain, that - the Lord is with you!
