January Topic: OBEDIENCE IS GREATER THAN SACRIFICE |
Of all the things I have had to learn over the length of my lifetime - this is the most important. If we don't get this right, the rest is impossible. So let's spend this first month of the year getting our priorities in the correct order. |
Genesis 7:16
THEN THE LORD SHUT HIM IN
Just imagine it! God tells Noah that He is going to flood the earth, so he must build an ark. Noah must have been an incredible man! He hadn't experienced rain, and may not have even seen a boat. Yet when God speaks, he responds.
He builds a massive ship, while experiencing the derision of his friends and neighbours.
He finishes the boat and if that is not enough, he then has to find two, a male and female, of every living creature, seven pairs of "every clean animal" and seven pairs of every bird. "(And by the way) they will come to you to be kept alive, so make sure you have enough food for them all for about five months! Oh, and it's going to start raining in seven days time!"
How would you like to be Noah? Just imagine sitting at home with the family when suddenly there's this noise. Not the patter of tiny feet but of two horses that come rushing up, spluttering and neighing all excited about something! You just manage to tether them when a couple of elephants drop by. You corral them just in time as two lions; a couple of giraffes and 14 sheep arrive. And sheep haven't changed much - they still don't like going where you want them to!
And in between tethering animals and giving them straw and hay to lie on, you are out getting food for each of the animals for 150 days and enough food for the birds for 150 days. (Not to mention what goes in must come out!)
Then on that momentous day, Noah, his wife and his three sons and their wives enter the ark. They sit down for tea and by now it's getting dark and water starts falling from the sky. They've just said "Grace", and then Mrs Noah says, "Did anyone shut the door?"
Horror fills their hearts and their gaze. But they need not have worried for as they sit there open mouthed they hear this amazing sound. The door closed on its own! The Lord shut them in.
Why did God do that? Because they had forgotten? No I'm sure they hadn't really. I believe it was for two very special reasons.
1) Miracles always follow obedience. Right throughout Scripture you find God performs miracles for the obedient.
2) God has a habit of revealing his heart of love in the "little things".
Trying being obedient today and see what happens.
