EVEN THE WINDS AND WAVES OBEY HIM
I've tried that, and I had far more success as a young Christian! I seem to have less and less authority over the weather these days and have to rely on my children to pray on my behalf!
I remember one time very well. I had gone back to England via South America and had stopped off at Rio de Janeiro. While there I took the trip up Corvacardo - the Statue of Christ the Redeemer, which overlooks and overshadows Rio. On a fine day the view is breathtaking.
Yes you noticed - I said on a fine day. By the time I got there the first time, heavy cloud had settled in for the day. On my last day, I made my second attempt, as I could see it standing majestically up in the mountains. By the time I got there - by taxi this time - the heat of the day was drawing in a thick sea mist up, the valleys and obscuring the view.
The crowd of tourists was wisely leaving fast but I resolutely remained, steadfastly waiting for the mist to clear. It got progressively worse. It was then I adopted my most authoritative voice and said, "In the name of Jesus - peace be still - mist be gone."
It probably did in a couple of days but certainly not in the 10 minutes I had left! So who is this Jesus - that even the winds and waves obey Him? Its good to be humbled now and again isn't it! We are then able to get a glimpse of who Jesus really is. Not just a human like you and me; not even just a redeemed, spirit filled human like us. Here was none other than the creator Himself in human flesh. No wonder the winds and waves obeyed Him.
The Jews thought the angels controlled the wind - so for them - who almost worshipped angels - here was one greater than angels! He controlled wind and waves and yet lived in human form.
How big is "your" Jesus? Never lose sight of the fact that He is God - and still today has the power and authority to make the winds and waves obey Him.
