THE SAVIOUR OF ALL MEN - ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO BELIEVE
I find this Scripture very interesting.
I often think I'd like to preach a series or write a book entitled "Whether You Like It Or Not!" This would be included. Why? Because Jesus Christ is the Saviour of all men - whether they like it or not.
Whether they do anything about it or not, Christ is still the Saviour of all men.
What I take this verse to mean is that when Jesus died on the Cross at Calvary He was there and then paying the price for the sins of all mankind, past, present and future.
What happens next is appropriation. I make it mine. I become one of those who believe and therefore the salvation that was secured at Calvary is mine too. This means that no matter which land I live in; which language I speak; which century I was born in; or of which generation I am a part, if I put my faith and trust in the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ - which took place approximately 33 AD - I am saved.
I am saved because the Eternal God looks down and sees that I have made Jesus mine. Jesus is the Saviour of all men - therefore He is my Saviour, too.
But you ask - if He is the Saviour of all men - who is going to hell?
The answer is simple - those who don't believe, those who don't appropriate the salvation for themselves.
It is also completely logical. You and I probably have a telephone. It can be used to reach Mongolia, Manchuria, Madagascar and Madeira. Anyone with a telephone could use their phone to reach people in those places. That's wonderful but until I dial a Mongolian number or a Manchurian number or a Madagascan number it would be of no use to me at all. That is the case at present!
That, however, doesn't stop the service being available. But it is there - "especially for those who need it and use it"!
I find this takes a lot of evangelistic pressure off me. As I share the Good News - whether my contact accepts it or not - Jesus is still the Saviour of all men, including them. Whether they like it, and accept it or not!
But the joy is only theirs - if they become - "especially (one of) those who believe."
