IT HAD TWELVE GATES WITH TWELVE ANGELS
Replacement theology has no place in Heaven!
The "ways in" have the names of the 12 tribes of Israel upon them. God will never reject His covenants. He is not like us - He is not fickle, He is not dependent upon the response of others - He is totally secure in Himself, and the temporary, waywardness, and the changes of man are irrelevant to Him. He is constant and faithful to the end.
His covenant with Abraham is certain and sure. His covenant with Jacob and his sons is equally firm and established. He establishes the very entrances into Heaven, with the names of the twelve tribes. Yes, they will all be there, and those of the Gentiles who are grafted in. He is the God of the Old Testament as well as the New.
Dr William Barclay gives a symbolic interpretation of the different gates which is illuminating, (though set in the Northern Hemisphere.) "In the east the sun rises and these gates are for those who found 'Christ in the glad morning of their days'. The north is cold and with a certain chill referring to those who came to Christianity 'by the intellectual exercise of thought through their minds'. The south speaks of warmth 'those whom came to Christ through their emotions, who's love ran over at the sight of the Cross'. The west speaks of the end of the day 'those who came to Christ at the evening of their days'". Note - they can all come in!
Whilst the angels can "guard the way", like the angels that guarded the way to the Tree of Life in Eden, the connotation here is slightly different, as nothing impure or evil can be around or anywhere near. They are there, therefore, not so much to guard, as to "Welcome". The angels have guarded the Church down through the centuries; they have been present at every Church; and remember the angels are there too, for each of the children. Now these take up their final positions.
So we have symbolism. The completeness of the city; the faithfulness of God's covenants; the acceptance of all the saints - no matter "when" they "came to Christ", and the angels who have protected and guarded us all, over the centuries, now all come together for our final state of indescribable bliss!
