IT HAD TWELVE FOUNDATIONS
The apostles - the "twelve" are the foundation stones of the Church, for it was through them Jesus established His Church on earth.
Peter, James, John, Matthew, Andrew, Thomas, Bartholomew, Judas (not Iscariot), Philip, Simon, James and Matthew, who "replaced" Judas Iscariot. John "sees" that the foundations of The City are the same and also complete.
For through them, the Gentiles also get represented. Not only does the city have its gates representing the tribes of Israel, but also its foundations represent the Apostles. Those who "saw God" in the "face of Jesus Christ" and who were His faithful witnesses. They were Jews who were prepared, not to keep the good news to themselves, but share it with others - in Jerusalem, in Judea, in Samaria and in the uttermost parts of the earth.
Whilst the Gospel has "taken on " all different shades of emphasis over the centuries, when we come to the "City", the "foundation stones" will be those that are pure and uncontaminated by "our additions".
It will be based upon the Apostles doctrine - that sure foundation, which enables us to know "where we are" and what, we can believe - for they were the eyewitnesses to His Majesty. The city is pure in every way, including its doctrine!
How often it is like a breath of fresh air when a speaker comes and illuminates "the Word" by putting it back into its historical, cultural, and Hebraic background. It comes to life in a new way which gives that added "sparkle and lustre".
Let's keep our Christianity based upon the Apostle's doctrine for that is not only our true foundation - but it also makes up the foundation stones of the city to which we are heading!
