Hebrews 12:3
CONSIDER HIM WHO ENDURED SUCH OPPOSITION FROM SINFUL MEN
Have you ever stopped to think what it must have been like for Jesus?
Just imagine it for a moment. As Jesus, here You are, the Word of God made flesh - the Creator and Sustainer of the whole cosmos - on earth and being treated like dirt.
First of all, You are not 'born at home' but in a distant town. Then, for many You are considered illegitimate. To others, You are a freak. You do good to people and the whole town asks You to leave. When You talk intimately of Father, You are criticised for blasphemy. When You reach out to the unloved, You are jeered at for not 'knowing' what 'sort' of person You are reaching out to.
Oh, the masses will come to be fed but will they carry out Your teaching? - No. The people You came to work with see You as a threat to their puny power and authority. They try and trap You, so that the people can see how ignorant You are, and so that they can carry on their own selfish agendas.
Then one of Your closest followers, someone You have spent an incredible amount of time with, throws Your love and affection back in Your face and goes and plots to hand You over to Your enemies. You, the Author of life and love and peace, are 'captured' by a band of bigoted religious underlings, who come against You with swords and sticks not realising that with a puff of Your breath they would not only fall back on the ground but return to the dust from whence they came.
You are taken by this rabble to the High Priest, who is supposed to be representing You, but who has, nevertheless, decided to do away with You. He, lacking the appropriate authority even on earth, has to pass You over to his Roman overlords to carry out his desires. You are brought before barbaric Romans and the hideous Herod and they pass their arrogant judgement upon You not knowing that they themselves stand before The Judge, who they will have to meet again, but then, with the roles reversed!
More than that You are beaten with whips with razor like thongs until Your flesh is gouged out. Spat at by a horde of drunken soldiers. Your beard is pulled from Your face. You are blindfolded, jeered at, and mocked and then asked - Who hit You, King of the Jews? Then to cap it all, You are forcibly 'crowned' with a circle of sharply pointed thorns.
It would be bad enough for us, wouldn't it?
But this was Jesus! The Son of God - The Author of Life.
