THE DOORS LOCKED FOR FEAR OF THE JEWS
Can you imagine it?
The disciples had witnessed the crucifixion and the burial. Now it's the third day and Jesus' body is "gone". Peter and John have been to the empty tomb and Mary has seen Jesus. They discuss the situation, but in order to do it, they lock the doors for fear of the Jews. At least John is honest about it!
What were they afraid of? Had the "news" that Matthew records already "got out". The "news" that the disciples had come secretly and stolen the body of Jesus. Were they afraid that they were going to be asked to "produce it", and they had no idea where "it" was? Was it, that whatever the circumstances, since Jesus had been crucified, they, being His closest friends could also be high or next on the "hit list"? Was it they were afraid of meeting this "new Jesus"? Or was it just their total bewilderment that caused the fear?
When Jesus "was with them", they had no fear. He was always in control. He was their leader and a very capable one too. They could leave everything to Him and He naturally was the Answer to every situation.
Then everything changed. He "lost" control and now "they" are totally out of control and in constant fear. Knowing that Jesus has disappeared or come back to life is no real comfort for them at this moment.
Tell me, how do you see the resurrection of Jesus? Does it cause you fear - because it is "indeed" unnatural to us? What sort of "Man" is this Jesus?
Are you afraid to talk about His resurrection for fear of the reaction you will get from others, especially the unsaved?
Would you rather stay fearful behind locked doors, than come out into the open and be "counted" for Him? Think about it!
