PEACE BE WITH YOU...
Remember breathing that great deep sigh of relief?
Well, join the disciples! The words have added poignancy don't they when we look at the context. Huddled, trembling and whispering in the dark behind locked doors. Crouched on the floor in a circle, heads almost touching each other, straining to hear each other's stumbling words.
Then it happens! Jesus "appears" among them. Did He have to cough to get their attention? Jesus had "come through" the locked doors and was now standing right beside them.
Who is this Jesus? He seemed so human in so many ways before, but this is Totally Something Else!
No wonder Jesus chose to prefix the meeting with "Peace be with you"! Interestingly enough He didn't stop there. Why not? Well, He could have been just "spirit". He could have been something completely new for them - but, no, He goes on to show them His hands and His side. It's Me. It's Me all right.
The very same Jesus, but with a little bit more of My Glory and it is important for you to see this other side to Me. Yes, I'm the same One who died. Yes, your sacrifice is still valid, and now I can prove it was accepted and perfect.
But more than that, I want you to learn another lesson. I told you I would die and rise again and you gave it mental assent, but I need you to accept it in your spirits and in your hearts. This is going to revolutionise your life - you are never going to be the same again!
Look at Me and see it really is Me, Jesus! Your friend and master.
The sigh seems to have come after that revelation, for John then goes on to say "(then) the disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord."
You and I will never know real peace - the Peace of God until by faith we see the Resurrected Jesus. For then we know the price was not only paid but also accepted.
What locked doors are you hiding behind?
Come, see Jesus once more - the One who specialises in entering through locked doors! And let Him show you those wounds - still visible. His hands and His side.
Hear Him say, "Peace be with you" - too, today!" Then go "throw open" those locked doors and walk in the peace, joy and strength of the Lord!
