October Topic: Grace

As it is not until we have a deep appreciation of what GRACE is and means, that we really come into the full liberty in Christ that we have been purchased to experience, let's take this month to explore some of its depths and treasures.

Romans 5:8

WHILE WE WERE STILL SINNERS, CHRIST DIED FOR US

It is vital we never forget this!

God didn't wait for us to be sinless before He sent Jesus to die. It was because He knew we were sinners He sent Jesus, the eternal Hope for the hopeless. There was nothing we could do to help ourselves, so Jesus Christ came and made the way for us, while we were still sinners. Even while our sin was still abhorrent to a Holy God, He the Son of God loved us enough to die for us, the Sinless for the sinful.

Please don't gloss over this because it is vitally important that you grasp its significance. I am stressing the point for a reason. There are far too many Christians today, who think that Christ dying for us while we were still sinners was fine for then but what about now? In other words, they can accept that Jesus loved them in all their sin at the point of their conversion - when they accepted Jesus Christ as Saviour, Lord and King but not now, after they have been a Christian a while and know what a mess and failure they really are. How can God still love me now, after all I've done (or not done) since I've been a Christian?

They think that in practise conversion brings immediate perfection, but unfortunately it doesn't in the short or middle term! They don't understand the process we call sanctification. On top of that, they don't realise that we don't come to know how wretched a sinner we really were until "after" we are saved/ born again. It is not until the Holy Spirit begins to illuminate my heart from the inside that I begin to truly realise and see who I really am and what I am really like, compared to what God designed me to be. The Holy Spirit highlights more and more the issues in my life that need dealing with and I feel awful.

But that is God's plan, in order to make us more and more like Jesus. That is not the time God gives up on us but rather the time He delights in us, because we are prepared to change to become more like Jesus. Every experience, every circumstance God will use to strengthen our character, prune off the fruitless areas so that we will come to full maturity in Christ.

Far from being the time God gives up on us, it is the time He can rejoice over us.

Listen - He loved us and died for us at our worst time - while we were still sinners.

He will continue to love us whilst we are sinners "saved by grace."!
