DO THE WORK OF AN EVANGELIST
This refers back to 2 Timothy 2:2 - train others.
The work of the Ministers is to equip, train up the Body of Christ and release each one into the ministry for which the Lord has called and anointed them.
Why is Evangelism so hard to do and avoided by so many? Because of two main reasons. One is that today, we leave it to the mega evangelists like Dr Billy Graham and Louis Palau, and the other is that we don't train people in evangelism.
Oh, we write books, or talk about it and tell people to do it, but most of the people I speak to say "But nobody tells us how!" That was what Paul told Timothy to do. That is what we should be doing. Training people in evangelism.
That doesn't mean we have to train everyone to be a Dr Billy Graham or a Louis Palau. It means we train them how to 'live' Jesus and how to talk about Jesus and His love to others. It means training them to understand how to communicate with their generation. To understand where the current generation is coming from; what their paradigm is; what their set of values is and how to meet their needs - perceived and real.
Often the unchurched talk of their 'surface needs', when we have to reveal to them their basic needs, and show them how although they are trying to meet those needs in their own way they will never be met fully until they are found in Jesus Christ alone.
The three basic needs of all mankind, regardless of age, status or race are: -
Security, Self Worth, and Significance.
Security - I am unconditionally loved. (No matter what I do)
Self - Worth - I am worthy of love and respect. I am an image bearer of God and thus have value.
Significance - I have a destiny. My life counts for something.
Often the work of the evangelist today, is to throw a spotlight on them for the unsaved and then reveal that the only answer, the only way they will get them met is through accepting Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.
Brings a whole new meaning to evangelism doesn't it?
