January Topic: OBEDIENCE IS GREATER THAN SACRIFICE |
Of all the things I have had to learn over the length of my lifetime - this is the most important. If we don't get this right, the rest is impossible. So let's spend this first month of the year getting our priorities in the correct order. |
Matthew 6:33
SEEK FIRST HIS KINGDOM AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS
I got sick of this verse!
After nearly 20 years in banking in England the Lord finally called me out and invited me to be a part of what He was going to do, to establish Christian Radio in Britain. Being a totally new venture, it was "faith" based. He made no specific promises about income, etc - except that He would provide.
Christian Ministries in England are well accepted once they've been going 400 years - ours hadn't! Not even 400 days! We were living in London at the time and had to move to Stoke-on-Trent. Over the next few months many well meaning Christians told us - "when you are in the Lord's will the house will sell quickly".
It didn't! I commuted for 8 months and then we moved anyway with the "benefit" of a bridging loan. In the end the house took about 18 months to sell. During that time, often motivated by "when you are in the Lord's will..." I prayed to the Lord for the sale of the house. People would of course constantly ask if I was praying. If so, was it hard enough? - With faith? In the name of Jesus? Etc. Each time I asked the Lord about the issue, all I got in response was - Seek first the Kingdom of God! Seek first the Kingdom of God! Seek first the Kingdom of God!
When I ventured to suggest I was, the answer came back - Seek first the Kingdom of God.
One thing I learnt more than anything else in those 18 months - was "to seek first the Kingdom of God". May I encourage you through my experience?
The Lord wants us to "trust Him" in ALL circumstances, and I believe it is a "growing" experience. You get to one level of trust and then He gives you another level of challenge until you accept through that as well that "you can trust Him".
Circumstantial evidence is not always a reliable guide that you are doing the Lord's will. Jonah got a boat going just where he wanted but he was "out of the will of God"!
Rather, don't worry about the circumstances - our prime "worry" is to seek first His Kingdom and His Righteousness. And the rest will fall into its rightful place.
