2 Corinthians 8:9
THOUGH HE WAS RICH, YET FOR OUR SAKES HE BECAME POOR
This is surely one of the reasons Christianity remains totally unique and radical!
Christianity is not based upon the survival of the fittest, the most spiritual, or the greatest human achievement. No. It is based upon inverted promotion! It is contrary to the 'rules' of nature and the 'rules' of the world. Jesus was totally radical and until we become the same we will not truly become one of His followers, one of His disciples.
Jesus, the rich One became poor like us, to bring us out of poverty into His riches.
As Frank Houghton wrote:
Thou who wast rich beyond all splendour, all for love's sake becamest poor.
Thrones for a manger did surrender, Sapphire paved courts for stable floor.
Thou who wast rich beyond all splendour, all for love's sake becamest poor.
Thou who art God, beyond all praising, all for love's sake becamest Man.
Stooping so low, but sinners raising, Heavenwards by thine eternal plan.
Thou who art God beyond all praising, all for love's sake becamest Man.
Thou who art love beyond all telling, Saviour and King we worship Thee.
EMMANUEL within us dwelling, make us what Thou would have us be.
Thou who art love beyond all telling, Saviour and King we worship Thee.
Jesus looked down and saw our poverty. Had He been like us, He would have turned His gaze away to the Glory and splendour that surrounded Him and let that horrible glimpse fade into insignificance. But He wasn't and didn't! Because of His Grace, initiated by His great Heart of Love, He stepped into time and space and became poor.
He identified Himself with the helpless and hopeless. Lifted us up by the hand and said "Rise and walk! Come sit with Me in Heavenly places."
Where are you sitting, today? If you are not sitting in Heavenly Places you are, in effect, telling Jesus that His work was not good enough or effective enough.
Are YOU a follower of Jesus? Are you getting along side the poor, lonely and helpless and showing them the Jesus in you - who, though He was rich yet for their sake became poor?
Try it today; you'll be amazed at the effect!
