2 Corinthians 9:15
THANKS BE TO GOD FOR HIS INDESCRIBABLE GIFT
I don't think I told you, but one day, I saw in a second-hand bookshop a small hardback book entitled "The greatness of God."
I thought 'anyone who can describe it in such a small book demands I read it!' No, some things are indescribable! The Grace of God; the Love of God; the Holiness of God; the Glory and Splendour of God, and His Indescribable Gift!
Oh, we can try; we can use up our vocabulary; we can borrow from others when we run out. We can exhaust the vocabularies of all the earth's dictionaries and thesauruses, but that will still only give us the minutest glimpse into the attributes, character and work of our God.
John wrote that "Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of His disciples which are not recorded. If every one of them was written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written."
Why are there so many hymns, songs, choruses, poems, books, tracts, sermons, commentaries and letters written? Because we are desperately trying to describe the indescribable!
Paul was talking about giving - the principle of sowing and reaping. If you sow sparingly you will reap sparingly. Give and go on giving! Don't hold on to your wealth and hoard it. It will either make you its slave or diminish before your very eyes over night! Remember it was God who entrusted it to you in the first place. It all belongs to Him - not just the 10% but the other 90% as well. You will be accountable to God for all your money - not just what you returned to Him.
Paul then encourages us and says, in effect, you can never out-give God! He has given you everything you have and are. Think about it! Where did they come from? Your efforts? No! From His gracious hand and generosity. Then be generous as your Heavenly Father is generous.
If you say you are His disciple, His follower, start acting like Him! Give generously. Give more than is required or requested. Then you will start showing His characteristics. Go on, be extravagant - like Him.
Let your gifts to others be so overwhelming that they become as indescribable as the Great Gift, God has given to us!
