I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE
I'd like to suggest to you that when Jesus uses the words I AM He does so with three very good reasons in mind.
Firstly, it's true! I AM and then whatever follows, is fact, and a promise we can rely on.
Secondly, it is in the present continuous tense. It infers that I am today; I will be tomorrow and forever. He does not contemplate a situation where the truth ceases. He doesn't say - I was the resurrection and the life.
Thirdly, He used the term to remind the Jews, His hearers, and down through the ages to us, that He is God. I AM was the Name given to Moses as the Name of the One who sent him to lead the people of Israel, out of the bondage of Egypt.
As you read John's gospel, it is almost as if Jesus used it repeatedly to prod the closed minds of the Jewish leaders to open up to the light of the truth that He is God. He was sent to lead the people of Israel out of darkness into the glorious light of the Gospel. Out of bondage into freedom.
I AM the resurrection and the life. Without Me, you have neither! (Presumably neither the resurrection of the just or the unjust!) You can't rise again and you can't know life.
Lazarus was about to experience both! But Jesus wanted Martha to know it too.
I also find it interesting that it was to Martha Jesus said it. Not to Mary, the one who sat at His feet, the one who "worshipped" Him, but the "Cinderella" of the family - and yet Jesus gives to her, one of His most precious promises.
How do you feel today? Do you feel insignificant? You'd love to be a Mary, but every time you try, you "run out of time" with business and work, and you too, end up as a Martha?
Hey, listen! Jesus wants to speak to you one word for today -
"I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE" Those who believe in Me will live, even if they die, and those that live and believe in Me, will never die.
