John 20:1
AND SAW THAT THE STONE HAD BEEN REMOVED
It's a big stone for a big hole!
Like a mighty millstone on its side, rolled down an incline, within a channel, and it comes to rest in a hollow at the mouth of a cave. Immovable! There for the centuries that will follow as a permanent seal of finality and security. This one had additionally been sealed in some way by the chief priests and Pharisees and guarded by their officers.
The women were naive in their devotion to Jesus. Three of them to move that stone? Well might they discuss who was to move the stone (Mark 1:3)!
But God honours devotion, however naive! He likes us to be simple. The beauty about the Good News is, that it is designed for all, not just the rich, the intellectual, the philosopher or theologian, but for the simple people too - me and you.
The Good News is that the stone was rolled away before they got there! They rolled up and the stone had gone! But so too, had Jesus!
The stone was not rolled away to let Jesus out - He had already risen - but to let us all know - forever, down through the centuries - that He had already gone! Sin had been paid for, death conquered, and the grave defeated and made powerless.
How do we know? The Tomb gapes open wide and empty! Just imagine being nearby - the earth moves with a violent earthquake and ends with the angel of the Lord rolling back the stone - on his own - he then jumps up, sits on it, and looks down at you (grinning?!).
Are you naive enough to believe the stone was rolled away? Are you naive enough to believe that Jesus has risen and is now alive forevermore? Are you naive enough to do naive things purely out of devotion to Him? Naive enough to give Him your life? Naive enough to be baptised? Naive enough to serve Him every day of your life?
Naive enough to share the Good News with others - that the stone has been removed to show that the tomb is empty - and JESUS IS ALIVE?
