September Topic: Perseverance

The Word says "To him who overcomes..."

The Christian walk is NOT easy, so we need to be people of determination, knowing that in the end, WE WILL WIN!

This month we will discover some words of comfort and encouragement to help us on our pilgrimage.

Hebrews 12:7

ENDURE HARDSHIP AS DISCIPLINE

The person who said the Christian life is easy should be shot!

That is totally unbiblical and if you are hoping it is true, forget it - let me reassure you - if it is easy, it is having no impact on society or the kingdom of satan. He can't be bothered with people who claim to be Christian and yet don't at least rattle his bars. He has enough trouble with those who do!

Did you know God is more interested in character than achievement? We live in a society that constantly promotes achievement - and we salute those who do - but that is not God's way. It creeps over into the Christian Church too. But God said to Samuel "don't look upon stature or the outward appearance, for I look at the heart."

How often we want to praise God and worship Him for what He has done in our lives - and there is nothing inherently wrong with that, we need to praise and worship Him for what He has done. But we should also be able to praise and worship Him - just - for who He is. If we always expect God to "deliver" at our request, we turn Him into little more than a genie. He becomes just one of many gods - But God is totally unique. He is high and exalted - He is the only God - none of the others are really gods at all - just 'man-made' idols.

As Isaiah found, as Job found, as Peter found - when you "see" God in His Glory no words are adequate but we repent in sackcloth and ashes. Repentance is where the process starts. Then the Lord begins a process of character development and it is entirely up to us how far we go in the process. Things don't just happen. God is in the process of refining, and developing our characters.

When you endure each 'set-back', look at it a different way. We are all on a mountain climbing experience. As you overcome each trial you actually reach the next height. Because you have 'made it', you are then able to help others by reaching down, grabbing their hand and helping them up to where you are. That's called 'leadership'!

As the writer to Hebrews put it "Endure hardship as discipline". Hardship is not to be seen as something to be avoided but that which will help mould our lives. Shape our lives into the character God desires. Mould us into the character of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Don't give up - soon you'll be like Jesus too!
