Hebrews 12:8
IF YOU ARE NOT DISCIPLINED ... YOU ARE ILLEGITIMATE.
Unruly kids! We've all known them and tried all we can to avoid them!
We seem to go around in circles in education and each one tries to avoid the simple straightforward principles we find in Scripture.
We find parents at a loss to know what to do. They live in a culture, which now says that there are no fixed values. We need to be broad-minded enough to explore alternatives. We mustn't return to the days of old which were so repressive and restrictive.
Allow your child the right to explore for themselves - to search for themselves - who they really are, without the bondages that past rules and regulations forced them and us to submit to. We are now in an 'enlightened age' when such restrictions are no longer acceptable. We need to move into total freedom of expression and lifestyle, however 'alternative' it may be.
We find sometimes children will come into our home and behave completely differently from our children and our principles and we would love to introduce them to some discipline but because they are not ours, they leave without the privilege (normally - sometimes, though, we do forget and let them into a few secrets!)
But they, then, are like illegitimate children - they cannot benefit from the discipline with which our children were blessed.
Why do we discipline our children? Because we love them. We want them to be able to represent us and our values in a hostile world. If that is true of us as parents, how much more will it be true of our Heavenly Father who wishes to discipline us so that we can represent Him and His values in our society?
Hang in there; it's worth it, for we shall be revealed as the true children of God.
