March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS |
This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do. |
Exodus 12:3
A LAMB FOR HIS FAMILY
Isn't it wonderful how we get different glimpses of the heart of God?
God identifies Himself with families. God is into the nuclear family. (That is nothing to do with Jacques Chirac, nuclear bomb tests and the people who order them to take place, especially in the Pacific!). God ordained it to be the basic unit of society. There would be one man and his wife, they would have children and so the family is formed. The basic nuclear family.
The Bible emphasises families and genealogies and the importance of relationships both natural and spiritual. Here we have the joining of the two. The nuclear family was the natural part and the lamb was the spiritual.
The Hebrews were slaves. They were a "nation" in the making but God wanted them for Himself. He needed to "get their attention". He also wanted them to understand some of His eternal plan and purposes.
When You are God the choices are limitless. God chose this occasion to demonstrate various things. He could have had a mega national "ox roast" and brought the people together "in that way" - but He knows that you can be "very lonely in a crowd".
He could have done it by tribes. However, this was not a time for fractions and jealousy, for one-upmanship or pride. He could have made it individual. However, this was not the time for that either, although prophetically it signalled what was to come. These people were slaves, under great spiritual, psychological, emotional and even physical pressure. The last thing they needed right now was independence and isolation. No, what they needed right now was a sense of identity with the "nation" but with the closeness and relationship of "family".
God loves your family too! Whilst our Passover Lamb's sacrifice is for individuals, He wants us to live in families - not just our natural, nuclear one, but also our Church one.
That is why "cell groups" are so important - not as a "passing fad or THE THING to do" but because we all need deep, meaningful and open relationships.
You see God was even looking beyond Calvary, to the "celebration" of the Last Supper.
When, we in our "families", take the "loaf" which reminds us of the Lamb of God given for us, from the foundation of the world!
