March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS |
This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do. |
Exodus 24:8
THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT
The chapters Exodus 20 through to Exodus 23 describe the rules, or "Book of the Covenant" which God gave to Moses and the people to live by and thus prosper.
In chapter 24, Moses read it all to the people who confirmed that they would obey it all and put it into practise. Then he took some bulls blood, (the bulls were used for an offering for the nation) and sprinkled it on the people with these words "this is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you, with all these words".
The blood set them apart to fulfil the covenant. It "sealed" the promises, and it made firm the agreement. The blood of the Lamb had protected them in Egypt.
Now they were to be protected by the Blood of the Covenant.
God had said it; the people would obey it and the blood sealed that union and separation to God.
All the sacrifices looked forward. This one looked forward to a new "Word". Here they had the Word of the Covenant but in agreeing to it God was paving the way for the Final Covenant with the Word of God. The Word made flesh, which dwelt among us. The words, which came from His lips, are life and health and peace.
The children of Israel to their shame, turned away from the Covenant that they had been given from God.
What about us? What about you? How close do you follow "the Word of God"?
Yes, the Old Testament, part of the Bible - the Word of God - is still the same; is still relevant to us and we need to heed it's message.
But just as it points us to Jesus, we also need to heed Him - the Word of God and follow Him!
For, we too, are under the Blood of the Covenant!
