2 TIMOTHY 1:7
GOD DID NOT GIVE US A SPIRIT OF TIMIDITY (FEAR)
I couldn't get this verse out of my mind whilst I was on that trip back to England via South America and Spain.
You remember I can't speak any Spanish and I was on my own. I had been warned by the travel agent and a friend before I left, that I should not go out alone at night, or once it got dark, particularly in Buenos Aires. It was repeated by the courier who met me on my arrival both in Buenos Aires and Rio. I had 4 scary events. 3 in Rio and 1 in Spain. None in the 'worst place', Buenos Aires - where I felt perfectly safe!
The first night I arrived in Rio I went out for a walk to get some food and had to settle for a pizza from Pizza Hut. I found the shop, had some difficulty explaining what I wanted but it eventually arrived and I headed back to the Hotel. I became increasingly aware of the sun having gone down quickly and that I was lost! I prayed like mad to no avail and eventually stopped by the kerbside, beside the rubbish and ate my, by now, cold pizza. I decided I'd have to systematically criss-cross the city to try and find my hotel. But by the Lord's grace, however, I found it quite soon after finishing the pizza. I shall never go out without a map or at best a card with the hotel name on it, again! I really loved that hotel room from that moment on!
The next time, I was accosted on the beach by a 'little urchin' who wanted to polish my dirty shoes. He'd already squirted it with polish but I thought a bird had flown over!
The third time I was 'ripped off' by a taxi driver on my way out to a 'monument' and had then very little money to get home, so had to catch a local bus and walk the rest of the way!
In Spain, I was weary and worn out from towing my overloaded suitcase much further than I had expected on arrival in Madrid City. I heard the police sirens and their van and saw some of their men racing across the street to my side - they leapt the railings and 'threw' a guy up against them. They then moved in towards me!
Though speaking no Spanish, I finally twigged that they had seen the guy trying to open my shoulder bag and thought he'd got away with my wallet. I was far too tired to have felt anything. The zip had most evidently moved but all my papers etc were intact and the wallet he had wasn't mine! Praise the Lord!
Even through all those events, and during the whole trip, (which also took in Bangkok) I had no real sense of fear, for I was totally overwhelmed by the Peace of God, the whole time.
Let this verse minister to you, today. What ever you are facing - God has not given you a spirit of fear!
Go out, with your head held up high and face it bravely - in His strength!
