I've gone past there! I've been in situations where I have cried out to God - "Help, I can't take any more. I've gone beyond the point that I'm able to bear this - Your Word is wrong - I can't handle any more!" And do you know what's happened next? I sense this picture of Jesus sat on His throne grinning at me and saying, "Actually you can - just a little bit more!"
So, is the Word of God wrong? Of course not! Was I not at the end of my tether? - I certainly believe I was! So what's the answer?
Perspective! I had had more than enough - I wasn't a wimp - I wasn't bluffing - I had more than I could cope with in my own strength. But Jesus wanted to stretch me. He wanted me to receive more strength than I had and the only way I could get it was to use up all of mine first or I would never recognise it as His!
Oh yes, His Word is truth. I feel I've gone beyond what I can bear but He knows better. He knows more and He knows how much we are able to bear with His strength! We don't know that before it happens! But whatever He does, it is always, yes always, for our enhancement, for our good and to make us more like Jesus, if we are prepared to walk that way.
Yes, we do have a choice. He won't give us the extra stretch if we refuse it or don't really want it. You see He knows I'm 'sold out' for Him, so He'll keep stretching me, but you can always stop early if you want to. The Good News is, that if you let Him stretch you - He'll do it again later! How elastic are you prepared to be?
Remember, God is love. He will NEVER go beyond that which we are able to bear with His strength - and it's worth going for the crown!
