March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS

This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do.

Leviticus 4:2

WHEN ANYONE SINS UNINTENTIONALLY

I don't know about you but the more I read Leviticus the more it becomes evident to me that the sacrifices, which were proscribed, were for unintentional sins.

I find that very interesting for two reasons. Firstly, we are not expected to be perfect before we get to glory. The Lord knows that we are not perfect and because of it, He has provided a way for forgiveness to be gained here and now, for the times we "blow it" when we so desperately wish we didn't.

However, neither does He expect us to carry on sinning "in the same ways". He expects us to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them. This is part of the sanctification process that begins in us through our allowing the Holy Spirit to work changes in our lives.

Secondly, it suggests to me there was no forgiveness for intentional sin. The cities of refuge were set up, not for the one, who "had a gun in his hand which accidentally went off", but for the one, who was just walking around the wall, totally accidentally dislodged the rock which dropped off and killed someone who just happened to be walking by underneath at that precise moment.

There was an old English Biblical phrase, which was incorporated into English law for a while - "malice a forethought". In simple terms it meant "intention to harm". A gun by definition "is designed to harm if not kill". He who has a gun or a knife in his hand or possession is deemed to do so with intent to kill - if he kills the wrong person that is not an accident - it is bad aiming!

Today, our legal system seems to be bending over backwards to make all crimes accidents. Is that because there was "no sacrifice" for intentional sins? I think it may well be so.

However, there is "Good News". The Perfect Sacrifice of Jesus Christ covers "all sin" unintentional and otherwise. Praise the Lord for that!

BUT once we are saved - let us not use or abuse His grace as our licence.

As John writes - he who is born of God doesn't continue to sin (intentionally?) 1 John 3:9.
